The metric BMI formula divides weight (kg) by height squared (m²). For centimetres, the formula multiplies by 10,000 to correct for the unit difference. For imperial inputs (inches and pounds), the formula multiplies by 703, a conversion constant that accounts for the difference between SI and imperial units.

Not reliably. Muscle is denser than fat, so a muscular person can land in the overweight or obese range on BMI alone despite having low body fat. BMI cannot distinguish what the extra weight is made of, only that it is there. A rugby player and a sedentary adult of identical height and weight receive the exact same BMI and category, even though one carries mostly muscle and the other carries mostly fat, two very different health pictures collapsed into one number. This is why BMI is best treated as a quick population-level screen rather than a precise reading of any one person's body composition.
The standard 18.5 to 24.9 healthy range was derived mostly from adult population data and is applied uniformly across ages. In practice, body composition shifts as people get older (typically less muscle, more fat, at the same weight), so the same number can mean something different at 25 and at 70, even though the calculator applies one threshold set to both. Some clinical guidance for older adults leans toward the upper half of the healthy range, or slightly above it, as a buffer against age-related muscle loss, but that nuance sits outside what a single fixed threshold can express, which is why age is worth discussing alongside a BMI reading rather than instead of it.
No. Pregnancy involves expected, healthy weight gain (the baby, placenta, amniotic fluid, and increased blood volume), which standard BMI thresholds were never designed to account for. A pre-pregnancy BMI is sometimes used as one input into planning healthy gestational weight gain, but the number produced by entering current weight partway through a pregnancy does not reflect an underlying health change the way it would outside of pregnancy. Prenatal weight guidance during pregnancy comes from a healthcare provider, not from a general-purpose BMI calculator.
This calculator uses the adult WHO thresholds (18.5, 25, 30). Children and teenagers are assessed on age- and sex-specific growth-chart percentiles instead, since a healthy BMI value shifts continuously as a child grows, what counts as healthy at age 8 is a different number than at age 16, purely from normal development. Applying the fixed adult thresholds to a growing child would misclassify a normally developing body as under- or overweight. This tool is built for adults 18 and over; a pediatrician or growth chart is the right reference for anyone younger.
To some degree, yes. The standard 18.5-25-30 thresholds were developed largely from research on European populations. Health bodies including the WHO have noted that some population groups, for example people of South and East Asian descent, tend to show higher body-fat percentages and higher associated health risk at the same BMI value as European populations, which is why separate, lower screening thresholds are sometimes used for those groups in clinical settings. Body frame (bone structure, typical proportions) is not captured by weight and height at all. This calculator applies one general threshold set to every input, so a result is a reasonable starting point, not a personalized verdict, one of the reasons BMI works best alongside other signals like waist circumference and blood pressure rather than on its own.
